Traditional Solution
Traditionally, fan discharge dampers or Inlet Guide Vanes (IGVs) are installed in the air handling units fans to modulate the AHU capacity. These devices work by creating resistance and pressure drop in the air entering the ductwork or, in the case of the IGV, reducing the efficiency of the fan.

As more VAV boxes in the system approach minimum flow, the AHU dampers or IGVs modulate closed to maintain a constant supply duct static pressure and a positive building static pressure. The dampers or IGVs for the supply and return fans are commonly operated by individual controllers. While maintaining design conditions, these discharge dampers or inlet guide vanes do little to conserve energy.
